The Amex Gold Card offers $ 120 in annual dinner credits and a high-quality mobile app, making it my favorite annual reimbursement card

The American Express® Gold Card has a special place in my wallet. It was the first Amex card I opened and my first time paying an annual fee for a card.

Despite a relatively high annual fee of $ 250, I was excited about one metal card (in rose gold!), and more importantly, a card that offers generous extras. Since a card’s design isn’t a valid reason to spend $ 250, I did the math and found that I could offset the annual fee with the card’s robust benefits, such as its $ 120 annual credit.See rates and fees

In addition to the financial benefits, I always consider a card issuer’s digital features and consumer reviews. After all, most of the transactions I complete are on my smartphone, so it’s important that I can easily pay bills, chat with customer service, and redeem rewards, all from the palm of my hand.

Amex’s mobile app is a top rated mobile app and Amex scores the highest in customer satisfaction, according to JD Power studies. Compared to other issuer apps I use, the Amex app allows me to more easily find recent transactions, check autopay and understand my membership benefits (like the dinner credit).

Every anniversary year of an account I re-evaluate or all 10 cards I still worth it, paying attention to those with annual fees. During my recent birthdays Chase Sapphire Reserve® and Amex Gold card, I decided to downgrade my Chase Sapphire Reserve because of the steep $ 550 annual fee – but I chose to keep the more affordable Amex Gold card.

Here are all the reasons why the Amex Gold card keeps its place in my wallet.

Benefits of the Amex Gold card

The Amex Gold card comes with a variety of benefits that make using the card worthwhile. While benefits like travel delay and baggage insurance are helpful, I’ve never used them and prefer to focus on perks that have a clear value. Here is an overview of all the major benefits with their estimated values.

Dinner Credit: Value up to $ 120 per year

I order takeout from Grubhub or Seamless once a month so I’m always looking for promotions that can offset the cost.

That’s why one of my favorite perks is the $ 120 ($ 10 per month) annual dinner credit that can offset purchases made with Grubhub, Seamless, The Cheesecake Factory, Ruth’s Chris Steak House, Boxed, and participating Shake Shack locations (after a one-time registration). If I’m particularly smart, I can get my monthly order for just a few dollars.

This benefit is automatic and you can expect the credit to appear automatically in your account two to four weeks after an eligible purchase. From my previous experience, it is often within a week.

Free Year Uber Eats Pass: Worth $ 119

Last October, Amex introduced new Uber benefits that Gold Card members (as well as Green and Platinum) to sign up for a free one-year Uber Eats Pass membership.

Uber Eats Pass is a monthly subscription service from Uber Eats that offers unlimited delivery charges of $ 0 and a 5% discount on orders over $ 15 at eligible restaurants (taxes and service charges may apply and do not count towards the order minimum). Those who sign up can also take advantage of no delivery charges when delivering groceries over $ 30 in select markets.

This benefit is worth $ 119 as Eats Pass normally costs $ 9.99 per month. Register before December 31, 2021 if you want to take advantage of this. After the free year, you will be automatically billed at the then-current monthly rate. (More information about the Uber Eats Pass Benefit

I have not activated this offer yet because I am most excited about the Uber Cash credit benefit, which I will explain next.

Uber Cash Credit: Value up to $ 120 per year

In addition to the Uber Eats Pass membership, Gold Card members can take advantage of $ 10 in Uber Cash every month for an annual savings of up to $ 120This fits well with the complementary year of Eats Pass, allowing cardholders to maximize savings on US Uber Eats orders. Uber Cash credit also counts toward Uber rides in the US.

My Gold card is already listed as a payment method in my Uber app, so I’m ready to take advantage of this benefit. If you’re interested, add your Gold card as a payment method in your Uber app to take advantage of it.

Hotel Credit on Qualifying Accommodations: Up to $ 100 per stay

Another benefit I’ve used in the past is hotel credit on eligible properties. When you stay in a home that is part of it The hotel collection, you can receive $ 100 hotel credit to spend on qualifying restaurants, spa and resort activities.

To be eligible, guests must book a minimum stay of two consecutive nights American Express Travel at more than 600 Hotel Collection properties. Cardholders may also receive a free room upgrade, early check-in and late check-out when available. This benefit can be used on multiple trips, allowing for maximum savings.

When I visited Arizona in 2019– I chose to use my $ 100 hotel credit toward food at the resort restaurant. During my entire stay I was able to get all my meals for free!

Amex Offers: Value varies by card member

I am always looking for a way to save money and I appreciate the ability to activate an offer and shop without entering a promo code at checkout. I had a hard time finding verified discounts online, so I was delighted to learn that Amex offers shopping deals at various retailers, such as restaurants and department stores.

Gold Card members can take advantage of potentially lucrative Amex offers that allows shoppers to receive a credit statement or points on eligible expenses. Simply activate an offer and shop at the participating merchant with your Gold card to take advantage.

You can find Amex deals for local merchants as well as brand names. Offers vary based on your location and are available for a limited time only. There may be minimum spending requirements such as spending $ 50 to earn a $ 10 credit.

I have saved $ 98 since opening my card, and in total Amex card members have saved more than $ 931 million since January 2010. Some of my favorite deals are with restaurants and online merchants.

Main thing

The Amex Gold card has a wide variety of benefits that are the reason why I keep it year after year. I find that many of the Amex offerings and the $ 120 annual dinner credit help me save money on daily purchases and offset the $ 250 annual fee. These benefits also earn it the top spot on CNBC Select’s best cards for rewards and to travel, plus runner-up for restaurants
