While the MBA has been the most popular graduate degree in America for many years, the most explosive growth in graduate management education has been the specialized master’s degrees. More often than not, these are so-called pre-experience degrees, meaning that you don’t have to bring years of full-time work experience to participate in any of these programs.
They enable deep dives in finance, accounting, business analytics, marketing, management, supply chain management, and many other areas. And they are especially popular with students who graduated in liberal arts during their undergraduate years and who are less ready for their jobs.
The truth is that years ago, many more companies picked up students majoring in English, political science and philosophy and put them in training programs. Due to the cutbacks in the management layers of the 1980s, many of those entry-level jobs have disappeared. Today, companies expect newly hired employees to contribute from the start. A jump for a business master’s degree begins a graduate in a business job.
Poets & Quants with Matt Symonds hosted the first CentreCourt admissions event for these programs in October 2020, where deans, admissions directors, career management officers and alumni of the programs gathered for a series of panel discussions, chats and interviews by the fireside. The sessions offer a unique opportunity to learn everything about these programs. You will gain practical insights into what the schools are looking for from the programs’ admissions officers, what career hours these programs open to career management director graduates, and how these degrees have impacted alumni careers.
