Hair loss is a tricky topic that continues to confuse healthcare professionals. Dr. Knut Moe, medical director for men’s health and hair loss treatment Son offers his best tips for why hair loss occurs and what treatments can help.
When asked what causes hair loss, Dr. Moe: “Hair loss in men is caused by a genetically hereditary sensitivity to dihydrotestosterone (DHT for short).
“At some point in a man’s life, DHT starts to affect hair follicles, usually starting at the temples or sometimes the crown and starting to miniaturize the hair and eventually die.
“This can happen differently in different men, as some people in their 40s, 50s and 60s begin to shed slowly in an age-appropriate manner, while others may lose hair at a much earlier age and at an alarming rate.”
When it comes to why some men are more prone to hair loss than others, Dr. Moe discussed that the process is very genetic.
Likewise, he said, if all the men in the family lost their hair at a young age, it is a logical assumption that you will suffer a similar fate.
“It is believed to be due to the expression of the genes that cause hair loss that determines how prone you are to hair loss and how quickly it can occur,” he added.
How to Fight Hair Loss
Dr. Moe listed the important habits one should adopt to stimulate hair growth, including:
“Our hair is made from keratin, a protein produced in the body,” explains Dr. Tired out.
“In combination with healthy blood flow and nutrients, the body needs these core ingredients to produce healthy hair.
“That’s why it’s important to pay close attention to your diet, hydration and exercise, and to stay fit and active.
“While we cannot prevent someone from getting hair loss in men, proper self-care in terms of nutrition, exercise and mental care can certainly help.”

Stress can play an important role in hair growth and interestingly, there are more reports of hair loss in men several months after Covid.
Dr. Moe continued, “Certainly, we know that hair loss can accelerate during periods of stress and cause a phenomenon known as ‘shock loss’.
“At a time of increasing social media, photos of ourselves posted online on nights out, etc., it is difficult to avoid regularly seeing pictures of ourselves.
Include some “ helpful ” comments from friends that indicate that we’re getting a little light and it’s easy to get self-aware.
“In addition, there are many people who really suffer from anxiety, and sometimes that anxiety can manifest itself as anxiety about appearance.”
It’s also important to note that there is no cure for male hair loss, although there are effective medical treatments, such as Sons 1mg Finasteride and 5 percent Minoxidil scalp application, advised Dr. Tired.
“These are treatments that are effective in 90 percent of men to stop hair loss and provide hair growth in more than 60 percent of men who use them,” he explained.
“In terms of other treatments that can aid in hair quality, the vitamin biotin has been shown to aid in hair quality and hair growth.
“Sons’ Saw Palmetto shampoo can also help with hair quality.”
When asked what other effective treatments can help combat hair loss, Dr. Moe stated: “There are many treatments that report treating hair loss in men.
“The reality is, there are very few that have been scientifically proven to treat hair loss.
“Medicines such as Finasteride and Minoxidil are still the most effective treatments for hair loss in men and have been proven to stop hair loss by 90 percent and increase the amount of hair in 60 percent of men.
“In terms of hair quality and hair growth, biotin supplementation has been shown to accelerate hair growth and improve hair quality. A shampoo rich in hair growth nutrients can also help.
“The most important thing with hair loss is to get advice / treatment at an early stage. If it’s something you think you’d like to treat, seek medical advice from your doctor or from hair treatment specialists such as Sons.
“There are plenty of effective treatments out there, but they are more effective at holding back hair loss than getting back hair you’ve already lost, so don’t wait too long.”
